WhatNot Analytics: How to Actually Know If Your Live Streams Are Worth Your Time
Here's a question most WhatNot sellers can't answer: Is streaming actually making you more money than just listing on eBay?
Not "does it feel productive." Not "the chat was fun." Dollars. Per hour. After fees. Compared to what you'd make listing those same cards and walking away.
If you can't answer that, you're running a business on vibes. And vibes don't scale.
Why WhatNot Analytics Is Hard
WhatNot doesn't give you data in a way that connects to the rest of your business. You can see how one stream did. But you can't easily see how it compares to your last 10 streams, what your best vs. worst stream types look like, what you're actually netting after fees, or which buyers keep coming back. Most WhatNot sellers make decisions like "should I go live tonight?" based on gut feel.
The Four WhatNot Metrics That Actually Matter
1. Revenue Per Stream (and the Trend)
The trend matters more than any single number. Is your revenue per stream going up, down, or flat over the last 3 months? Flat despite more effort means something in the approach isn't working.
2. Items Per Stream vs. Revenue Per Item
High items + low revenue per item = moving volume but selling cheap. Low items + high revenue per item = fewer sales but higher-quality cards. Knowing which mode you're in helps you source appropriately.
3. Repeat Buyer Rate
The most undertracked metric on WhatNot. A buyer who shows up to 5 streams is worth dramatically more than 5 one-time buyers — in revenue and in community value. They chat, they hype the stream, they bring friends. If you don't know who your top 10 repeat buyers are and what they spend per show, you're leaving real money on the table.
4. WhatNot vs. eBay Margin Split
For any card, you have a choice: stream it or list it. Streaming is faster cash but WhatNot's fees are higher and final prices are often lower. eBay has lower fees and potentially higher prices, but it takes weeks. Neither is universally better. The only way to make smart decisions is to track both channels together.
The Day-of-Week Insight Most Streamers Miss
Most people stream when it's convenient for them. But your buyers' schedules matter more than yours. When you look at average revenue by day of week, patterns almost always emerge. Some sellers consistently do 30-40% better on certain nights because their core audience is available then. This is discoverable data — but you have to track at least 8-10 streams before the pattern becomes clear.
The Fee Math Most Sellers Get Wrong
For sports cards and TCG, WhatNot charges:
- 8% commission on the final sale price
- 2.9% payment processing
- $0.30 per order
On a $20 sale that's about 12.4% total. On a $5 sale it's closer to 17%. The flat $0.30 makes cheap cards eat margin fast. Compare that to eBay at roughly 12.9% + $0.30 and the difference is smaller than most people assume. The real variable is time — WhatNot turns cards in hours, eBay in days or weeks.
The Simple Test
Go look at your last 10 WhatNot streams and answer these four questions:
- What was your average revenue per stream?
- What was your best day of the week?
- Who were your top 3 buyers, and how much have they spent total?
- How did your last stream compare to 60 days ago?
If you could answer all four off the top of your head, your tracking is solid. If you had to go hunting and do math, there's a better way.
How I Track All of This
I built ResellPulse specifically because I couldn't find a tool that handled the eBay + WhatNot combined picture. WhatNot stream data flows in automatically. You see per-stream breakdowns, running records, top buyers across all time, and a direct comparison against your eBay numbers. The day-of-week chart shows average revenue by day so you can see immediately whether your Thursday streams actually outperform your Saturdays.
